White enamel. Orange claw feet. Big blue eyes, rosy cheeks, and a smile that takes up most of one end. Bernie lives in a house on Pebble Hill, just past the old mill — and he dreams of adventures every single night.
A bath sits still. A bath waits.
And on any ordinary Tuesday, a bath might just be the least exciting thing in the house. But Bernie knows there's more to life than sitting quietly in the bathroom.
So the first thing he ever says out loud is a complaint:
“I'm tired of sitting here all on my own, with nothing but soap and cold, hard stone.”
And then — because this is Bernie's world — something magical happens. A warm golden breeze blows in, fairy dust sparkles and swirls, and Bernie gets his wish. He becomes something new.
A boat, first. Then a bus. And there are more adventures to come.
But here's the clever part: when Bernie transforms, you don't see his orange feet any more. He completely becomes whatever the adventure calls for. His boat has its own look. His bus has its own look. Each transformation belongs to that particular story.
When Bernie is simply Bernie, though, you know him straight away — a white enamel bath with his familiar face and those unmistakable orange feet.
That's what makes Bernie special. He isn't a character who wears a different costume. He becomes the adventure.
So there's no single “costume” that represents the whole series. Bernie in his natural bath form is the Bernie we know and love. The boat, the bus and whatever comes next are all different sides of his wonderfully wild imagination.

Where's Gus?
Gus is a small yellow rubber duck in a sailor hat, and he is on every single page of every Bernie book. Sometimes he's obvious. Sometimes he is one yellow pixel behind a shampoo bottle.
Children find him faster than adults do. This is not an accident.
